Living Worm Castings

Living Worm Castings are a biologically active soil amendment produced by Red Wiggler compost worms (Eisenia fetida). Rich in beneficial microorganisms, organic matter, and naturally occurring plant nutrients, worm castings help improve soil structure, support healthy root development, and enhance overall soil fertility.

Usage

1. Top Dress: Sprinkle 1-2 Tablespoons around the base of plants.

2. Mix into Soil: Blend 10-20% castings into potting mix.

3. Seed Starting: Add a small handful to each cell or tray.

4. Compost Tea: Brew a Living fertilizer for stronger roots and greener growth

5. Best used within 3-6 months.  Can remain effective up to 12 months if stored properly.

Storage

1. Keep moist and out of direct sunlight.

2. Keep them in a cool, shaded location (roughly 50–70°F / 10–21°C).

Signs your castings are still healthy:

Good living castings should:

  • Smell earthy, like a forest after rain.
  • Be dark and crumbly.
  • Retain a little moisture without being soggy.

If they smell sour, rotten, or like ammonia, they've likely gone anaerobic and are no longer in ideal condition.

Worm Tea

Fresh Worm Tea is made from premium worm castings and contains naturally occurring beneficial microorganisms, organic compounds, and plant-available nutrients that help support healthy soil and vigorous plant growth.

Usage

1. Watering Plants: Dilute 1:1 with water and pour at the base.

2. Foliar Spray: Spray leaves (Morning or Evening) to reduce rapid drying and UV exposure.

3. Seed Starting: Used diluted tea to boost early growth.

4.  Can be used as a root drench for vegetables, flowers, herbs, trees, shrubs, lawns, and houseplants.

Before Use

1. Shake or stir gently before application to redistribute suspended solids.

2. Apply immediately after opening when possible.

Safety

  •  Keep out of reach of children and pets.
  • For gardening use only.
  • Wash hands after handling.
  • Do not ingest.
  • Rinse edible crops with clean water before consumption

Product Characteristics

Because this is a natural, living product:

  • Color may vary from light brown to dark brown.
  • Some settling is normal.
  • An earthy aroma is normal.

If the product develops a strong foul, rotten, or sulfur-like odor, it should be discarded rather than applied to plants, as this can indicate undesirable anaerobic microbial activity.

Red Wiggler Compost Worms

Red Wiggler Compost Worms are surface-dwelling composting worms that rapidly consume organic matter and produce nutrient-rich worm castings.

Why These Compost Worms Stand Out

  • Heat & cold tolerant — raised outdoors, not climate‑controlled
  • Fast composters that break down kitchen scraps efficiently
  • High reproduction rates for growing your colony
  • Clean, natural diet for healthy worms and premium castings
  • Excellent for bins, outdoor piles, raised beds, gardens, and worm towers.

Instructions

1. Upon Arrival - OPEN IMMEDIATELY

2. Lightly mist worms and bedding with dechlorinated water (DO NOT DRENCH).

3. Allow to rehydrate in their bag for a few hours.

4. Add worms and bedding to their new bin within 24hrs.

5. Allow the worms to settle at least 2-3 days in their new bin before feeding.

IMPORTANT NOTES

Worms are shipped slightly dehydrated to ensure their survival during shipping. Therefore, your worms may be sluggish or appear dead.

Your worms just need a little time to rehydrate  and acclimate to their new environment.

* A FEW worms may fail to survive the shipping process. The majority of your worms should arrive alive. Please contact us if that is not the case.*

Garden & Compost Uses

Red Wigglers are excellent for:

  • Compost bins
  • Raised beds
  • Vegetable gardens
  • Flower beds
  • Container gardens
  • Greenhouses
  • School composting projects

Their castings help improve soil structure, water retention, microbial activity, and nutrient availability.

Care

Our Red Wigglers are outdoor-raised. Therefore they are more hardy than other sellers, and MAY be able to tolerate lower and/or higher temps. Usual care guidelines are as follows:

  • Keep worms between 55–75°F (13–24°C).
  • Ideal operating temperature: 65–75°F (18–24°C).
  • Keep out of direct sunlight.
  • Never store in a sealed, airtight container.
  • Keep bedding moist, about as damp as a wrung-out sponge.
  • Do not allow bedding to dry out or become waterlogged.

Temperature Guidelines

  • Below 40°F (4°C): Worm activity slows significantly.
  • 55–75°F (13–24°C): Optimal feeding, reproduction, and compost production.
  • Above 85°F (29°C): Heat stress may occur.
  • Above 95°F (35°C): Extended exposure can be fatal.

If outdoor temperatures regularly fall below freezing:

  • Move bins indoors or into a protected location, or
  • Insulate outdoor systems to reduce temperature fluctuations.

Bedding

Suitable bedding materials include:

  • Shredded newspaper (non-glossy)
  • Cardboard
  • Coconut coir
  • Aged leaves
  • Finished compost

Maintain good airflow and moisture throughout the bedding.  Maintain bedding moisture similar to a wrung-out sponge.

Feeding

Feed small amounts at first, increasing as worms become established.

Recommended foods:

  • Fruit and vegetable scraps
  • Coffee grounds and paper filters
  • Tea leaves or tea bags (without staples or plastic mesh)
  • Crushed eggshells
  • Small amounts of bread or grains

Avoid:

  • Meat
  • Dairy products
  • Oily or greasy foods
  • Excess citrus
  • Onions and garlic in large quantities
  • Salty or heavily processed foods
  • Pet waste

Bury food beneath the bedding to reduce odors and discourage pests.

Harvesting Castings

Under good conditions, worm castings are typically ready for harvest in 2–4 months, depending on bin size, worm population, feeding rate, and environmental conditions.

Healthy Worm Indicators

Healthy Red Wigglers are:

  • Reddish-brown in color
  • Active when exposed to light
  • Firm-bodied
  • Found throughout moist bedding

Helpful Tips

  • Avoid overfeeding; only add more food after most of the previous feeding has been consumed.
  • Maintain a balanced mix of food scraps and carbon-rich bedding.
  • Provide good ventilation to prevent odors and maintain a healthy composting environment.
  • Regularly monitor moisture and temperature for the healthiest worm population.
